Happy 2014 to everyone! We had a great start to the year watching the amazing Sydney fireworks from my besties place at Lavender Bay! The skies were lit up by the creative genius of Reg Mombassa, some of the best fireworks Sydney has ever seen. Following the theme of fire we set off on our annual trip to Stradbroke Island. While some people were fleeing the island we headed straight into an inferno. The fires had started by lightening from and electrical storm. Our friends assured us all was safe at their Amity Point beach house. There may not have been power but there was plenty of fresh fish and prawns, delicious wine and some not so cold beers waiting for us. How could not say no? The ferry across to the island was full to the brim, not of the usual holidaymakers but of fire trucks and firemen. Most of these men were volunteers. Brave men and worthy of more praise than they are given. On reaching the island there were men returning to the mainland looking exhausted from long hours fighting fires, back burning and keeping people safe. Over the three days we were there the fires worsened and there was one night I admit to being scared. The winds were constantly changing and were unpredictable, rain was what was needed but it didn’t come.It was not until we were at Brisbane airport that the rain came, closing the airport for several hours. Violent electrical storms, torrential rain and lightning. Nature can be harsh.

UNTITLED (Holiday)This is the time of year when we all think about a holiday. It’s almost Christmas and if you live in the southern hemisphere it’s almost summer. I am now on holidays hooray! I have left behind the winter months of My Greek Island Home and all my furry friends to enjoy my other life, my Australian life. This is the time of year I spend with family, and friends in the summer sunshine. The sun is not shining at the moment but it is still a beautiful place to be. I am writing this with my computer perched on my lap looking out across Sydney harbour and through the heads. Although it’s grey there is still activity on the water, sailing boats, ferries and ocean liners float across the horizon in front of me. I have chosen this painting by Matthew Usmar Lauder to accompany this post. It’s a beautiful painting small like a gem and touches me. I love it because it reminds me of holidays, it reminds me of the past and it intrigues me. I hope you love it too.

I have just arrived back from a sailing holiday in Turkey. It was bliss! The weather was perfect, deep blue skies to match the deep blue sea. I travelled with two of my Greek girlfriends by car to Marina Marti. We took a boat from Mytilene to Ayvalik and then drove down past Marmaris to meet an old mate, the captain. The captain was the first photographer I worked with when I arrived in London. We were joined by another friend on day 3 which let us off the hook from our boating responsibilities. This allowed us time for more serious things such as sunbathing. What I loved about this trip was the light heartedness of everyone. It was fantastic to laugh. A whole week of laughing is the best therapy in the world. It made me think of how many times we forget our humor, we leave it some where else. We take our lives so seriously. Sometimes it’s great just to forget all the stuff that makes us feel heavy and find time for fun and frivolity. Thank you Captain John for sharing your boat and your humor and thank you Mel, Elpida and Maria for the dancing, the laughing, and for a fabulous week.

It was a real surprise to find this fantastic old fashioned general store in Potamos Kithira. A family run business started in 1945 and handed down from grandfather to grandaughter. Matthew’s eyes nearly fell out of his head when he saw stacks of floral enamel bowls and plates. ‘Just what I need for my new studio’ he announced. I left with a ball of brown string and tradition white curtains for My Greek Island Home. I must admit  it was difficult to leave this shop and all it’s treasures, it will be the first stop on our next visit, which hopefully will be soon.

I’m loving the summer on My Greek Island Home and the shadows created by the abundance of harsh sunlight. There are patterns everywhere, transforming static surfaces into moving images.

We have gone from Our Greek Island Home on a Greek Island holiday. No dog walking, kitten feeding or animal rescue for a week! We are on the island of Kithira, a beautiful island between Crete and main land Greece and it is bliss. Here is a taste of what touches our senses every day. Now I will jump back into the crystal waters and swim my heart out. Happy summer holidays
